Kenya - Promoting High Nutritional Standards in Rural Women
About the Project Area
Limuru is an area known for its vast tea plantations, contributing a big percentage to the tea exported from Kenya. The tea pickers who are among the poorest women in Kenya, come from every province and tribe to get very small wages according to the kilos of tea leaves picked. They live in deplorable conditions.
Kimlea reaches out to them through different programmes to help them improve in their standard of living for the whole family. Among them is the cookery and nutritional training.
The women are taught how to prepare different food items using the ingredients and equipment available to them. They are taught the nutritional value of different foods especially those available in their areas, to prepare well balanced diets.
Kimlea Training Centre
Kimlea Training Centre is located in Kiambaa, Tigoni sub-location. The area where the project is Limuru tea plantations in the Kiambu district. See map.
50 women are being trained in this outreach programme. It will indirectly affect some 350 persons.
Aims and Activities
This project aims to educate the women in cookery with nutritional values, to improve and ensure a healthy family through nutritious meals, and reduce the incidence of disease in the family, mainly in the children as a result of poor nutrition.
